Farmers Weekly Mentions 1954 Judging Contest

Those of us with rural ancestors don't have city directories and other sources to find the occasional mention of our ancestor. However, the University of Illinois has the Farm, Field, and Fireside-Agricultural Newspaper Collection which contains digital images of dozens of weekly and monthly agricultural publications.

While I've not had time to experiment with it heavily, I did find one reference to my Grandpa Cecil Neill in 1954 in the Farmer's Weekly Review of 7 July 1954. Once I stopped using Cecil as one of the search terms, I had more success. I had forgotten that frequently in items of this type he's simply referred to as "C. R. Neill." This reference comes from an annual Field Day held near Brooklyn, Illinois. I seem to remember as a kid going to sales that I think were sponsored by the Lamoine Valley Aberdeen-Angus Association. However, Grandpa died when I was 6 months old, so I have none of my own memories of him.

According to this Grandpa won the judging contest that day.

I bet Grandma Neill (Ida Trautvetter Neill) stayed at home. Tradition has it that Grandma rarely went to anything of this type. For the genealogical purists out there I don't have any source for that statement since I wasn't alive in 1954. But Grandma wasn't one to leave the farm except to go to "town" once a week, or the occasional visit to a doctor or relative.
